AUGUSTA – State Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess has been appointed as a member of a commission charged with developing, maintaining and evaluating a plan for sustainable social and financial investment in health development of Maine’s young children and their families. The appointment was made by House Speaker Glenn Cummings.

Rep. Strang Burgess, a first-term lawmaker from Cumberland, is one of four legislators serving on the Maine Children’s Growth Council, established by the Legislature earlier this year. The council consists of 27 members who have a strong interest in early childhood and early care and education.

“The first five years of a child’s life is so important when it comes to promoting supportive relationships and providing valuable learning opportunities,” Rep. Strang Burgess said. “As a legislator and a mother of three boys, I believe we need to pool our resources and work together on strategies to encourage the healthy growth and integral development of young children.”

Rep. Strang Burgess served on the Commission on Priorities for Maine’s Young Children last year, which made a number of recommendations to the Legislature including the establishment of the Children’s Growth Council.

The council must report back to the Legislature, Governor Baldacci, the Children’s Cabinet and the Department of Health and Human Services by January 15, 2010 and every 2 years thereafter on its activities and accomplishments in developing its long-term plan for investment in Maine’s young children.

Rep. Strang is a member of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. She represents Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Long Island and part of North Yarmouth.
