The Maine Cancer Foundation’s 2007 Carroll Award has been awarded to Meredith Strang Burgess “for extraordinary efforts to advance the path to a cancer free future"

The Award is presented each year to a Maine resident who has made a significant contribution to fighting cancer through awareness.

Ms Strang Burgess, who is a seven year breast cancer survivor, was presented with the award at the recently held annual meeting of the Foundation at which she also stepped down as President after serving in that capacity for the last five years.

The mission of the Maine Cancer Foundation is to improve the health and well being of Maine people by:

• Funding scientific laboratory and clinical cancer research
• Sponsoring professional and public education regarding knowledge and advances in cancer medicine
• Sponsoring cancer support programs

Ms Strang Burgess, the Elected State Representative, District 108 Maine; an alumna of the University of Maine; and CEO for Burgess Advertising and Associates; began a very public 18-month battle with breast cancer in 1999.

Her story received coverage locally in publications including MaineBiz, Portland Magazine and the Portland Press Herald; and nationally in the October 2000 issue of McCall's magazine.

She was also included in "Portraits of Courage, Voices of Hope", a photographic essay of breast cancer survivors that debuted in Portland before being published as a book of the same name, the proceeds from which go to support the patient education and outreach programs of the Maine Cancer Foundation.

In 2002 Ms Strang Burgess founded The Cure Breast Cancer for Me events that have raised more than $750,000 over the past five years.
