(Cumberland, ME 5/17/10) – State Representative Meredith Strang Burgess of Cumberland announces her re-election bid for the Maine Legislature. Strang Burgess is the current State Representative for House District #108, representing Cumberland, Chebeague Island, Long Island, and part of North Yarmouth.

In the legislature, Rep. Strang Burgess has been a strong advocate for creating a more business friendly climate. Strang Burgess has agreed to run for a third term in the Maine House of Representatives and is taking time away from her small business so that Augusta hears the voice of business owners.

"Over the past four years I have worked in a bipartisan way and have gained respect on both sides of the aisle. I have also worked very hard to represent my constituents and foster a good working relationship between local and state government," said Strang Burgess. "I believe that it is possible to have a strong business record while supporting our quality of place. Maine is unique in its entrepreneurial spirit, plus, the natural beauty that surrounds us is intrinsic to our well being personally and professionally."

In 2009, the Maine Economic Research Institute (MERI) ranked Strang Burgess as a "very strong" legislator for championing positions on economic and business legislation. In the 123rd Maine Legislature, Strang Burgess served on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and has continued to support aggressive education legislation to improve K-12 and push for stronger education goals and graduation rates. Then in the recent 124th Legislature, she served on the busy Health and Human Services Committee, and started her term working on creating a state budget that was a reduction from previous years, which had not been accomplished in decades. She has been a strong advocate for a more responsive and responsible social service budget, while advocating and protecting some of Maine’s most vulnerable citizens. In 2009, Strang Burgess received an advocacy award from the Maine Association of Community Service Providers for her commitment to supporting services for Maine people with disabilities.

Strang Burgess also currently serves on the Maine Children's Growth Council and has just been appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Health Care Reform Opportunities and Implementation, to integrate the new federal health law in Maine. She serves as the apppointed memeber from District One on the Cumberland County Charter Commission.

Strang Burgess, the third generation in her family to serve in the Maine State Legislature, is the CEO of Burgess Advertising & Marketing headquartered in Portland, Maine and has been a leader in Maine's business community. She is a member of the Cumberland County Republican Committee and a long-standing member of the Town of Cumberland Republican Committee and has volunteered for numerous local, state and national campaigns.

Strang Burgess is past recipient of the 2007 Maine Cancer Foundation's Carroll Award for extraordinary efforts to advance the path to a cancer free future; in 2006, named to the Junior Achievement of Maine Business Hall of Fame. She currently serves on the Hebron Academy Board of Trustees and is the immediate Past President of the Maine Cancer Foundation and of the University of Maine Board of Visitors. She is active in genealogy and has also served on the Board of the Maine Historical Society.

A native of Camden, Meredith has three sons and lives in Cumberland her fiance, Doug Stewart.
