- REP. MEREDITH STRANG BURGESS INFORMS CONSTITUENTS
OF REGIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM
(12.30.09) AUGUSTA, ME - With the college application season fast approaching, Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess (R-Cumberland) would like to remind her constituents of the New England Board of Higher Education’s (NEBHE) Regional Student Program (RSP). The RSP provides a tuition discount to New England residents when they enroll in approved degree programs at out-of-state public colleges and universities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The RSP provides tuition breaks to Maine residents enrolled in an approved degree program offered by a public college or university in another New England state when a comparable program is not offered by a public college or university in Maine. Established in 1957, the RSP has helped New England families with discounts on over 220,000 tuition bills. The average annual tuition savings per full-time RSP student is approximately $7,000.
Applying for the RSP is straightforward. Some college applications include a box to check for "New England Regional" or "RSP." Otherwise, a student should indicate "Applying for Regional Student Program (RSP) status." No separate application is required, and a variety of graduate programs participate in the RSP as well.
For a list of the degree options offered through the RSP, and more information about the program, visit the NEBHE website at http://www.nebhe.org/tuitionbreak. Some of these programs do have special requirements or are not available to first-year students. It is also important to note that because the RSP is a tuition discount, it does not affect a student’s eligibility for any other forms of financial aid.
Rep. Strang Burgess is a second-term legislator representing House District 108, which includes Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Long Island and part of North Yarmouth.
