PORTLAND - Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap - joined in Portland today by State Representative Meredith Strang Burgess, State Senator Dennis Damon, Maine CDC Director Dora A. Mills, representatives of the Maine Cancer Foundation and Maine Breast Cancer Coalition — announced statewide availability of a new license plate benefiting breast cancer education and research in the State. "Today marks the culmination of lots of hard work by an array of organizations and individuals," Dunlap said, continuing, "all aimed at giving Mainers a simple way to help fight one of the most dangerous threats to the health of families and friends: breast cancer."

"I am thrilled to finally hold this plate in my hands, or more importantly, to see it attached to the bumper of my vehicle," said State Representative Meredith Strang Burgess, a primary legislative sponsor of the new plate, and herself a breast cancer survivor. "Shepherding this plate through the process— from an idea to seeing the bill signed into law by Governor Baldacci, and now having them available to everyone, has been a truly amazing experience. I'm excited to see these plates begin to appear on cars from Fort Kent to Kittery, providing not only much-needed revenue for breast cancer support services, but also providing a very visible reminder of the number one way to turn potential victims into survivors." The plate design features a pink ribbon superimposed over an outline of the State of Maine, and features the slogan "Early Detection Saves Lives."

The new plate is available at all Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch offices and at many municipal offices. If the plates are not available in your town, they can be purchased at the nearest BMV branch office, or by mail. Revenues generated from sales of the plates are placed in a dedicated fund overseen by the Maine Center for Disease Control. Funds will be shared equally among three groups: a breast and cervical health program within the Center; a statewide nonprofit organization serving people with breast health and breast cancer needs; and an independent state-based foundation that provides funding for cancer research, education and patient support programs.
