AUGUSTA - State Representative Meredith Strang Burgess (R-Cumberland) has been selected to participate in the 2008 Emerging Political Leaders Program, sponsored by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation. She was nominated earlier this year by Speaker of the House Glenn Cummings.

Representative Strang Burgess will represent Maine at the program, which is scheduled for July 14-17, 2008, at the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business. For three days, attendees will participate in a series of highly interactive and provocative discussions led by Darden School faculty members. These legislators are given numerous opportunities to measure their expertise and knowledge against some of the most successful political and business leaders in the nation.

Representative Strang Burgess, a first-term lawmaker, was one of 50 legislators selected nationwide to participate in this prestigious program. Legislators were selected based on their dedication to public service and their proven leadership qualities.

According to Stephen G. Lakis, President of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation, those legislators attending are "the cream of the crop and will, in the near future, be taking on significant leadership responsibilities in their states. This program helps them prepare to take on the mantle of leadership and bear the responsibilities with the utmost effectiveness."

Those selected to participate receive a scholarship that covers tuition, lodging, and meals during the program as well as a travel allowance to and from Charlottesville.

Rep. Strang Burgess serves on the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. She was a member of the Commission To Develop a Strategic Priorities Plan for Maine's Young Children.

A graduate of the University of Maine, Rep. Strang Burgess is the founder and owner of Burgess Advertising & Marketing. A breast cancer survivor, she is a cancer activist for early detection and past president of the Maine Cancer Foundation.  She is also the past chair of the Board of Visitors for the University of Maine.

Rep. Strang Burgess represents District 108, which includes the communities of Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Long Island and part of North Yarmouth.
