AUGUSTA, ME - Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess (R-Cumberland) would like to remind all students planning to attend college in the fall to file the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form soon. The lawmakers would also like constituents to know that help is available to those having difficulty in filling out the forms.

On January 27th at 2 pm, all Maine students and their families are invited to participate in College Goal Sunday for assistance in completing the FAFSA. College Goal Sunday is a one-day statewide volunteer program coordinated by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) that provides free information to students and their families who are applying for financial aid for post secondary education.

Individuals hoping to qualify for financial aid must complete the FAFSA form. Information provided on the FAFSA accesses the applicant's eligibility for financial aid based on the student/family income and assets.

The workshop scheduled for Portland and surrounding communities will be held at the University of Southern Maine at the Abromson Community EducationCenter's Hannaford Lecture Hall. The Abromson Center is located at USM's Portland Campus.

Financial aid professionals will provide coaching staff to walk individuals through the application line-by-line and to answer questions regarding state and federal financial aid programs. Attendees should bring copies of their most recent tax information. Those attending ITV sites will have the ability to phone the presenter to have their questions answered.

Rep. Strang Burgess encourages anyone concerned about paying for higher education to attend one of these workshops. "Applying for financial aid can be confusing," Rep. Strang Burgess said. "These financial aid professionals are ready and willing to help students and their families negotiate the complexities of the process. The information provided could prove invaluable to finding money to help pay for college."
