Dear Residents of House District 108,
The 124th Maine State Legislature has officially adjourned for the year. It was a very busy and challenging session. I want to take the opportunity to provide you with an update and overview of some of the issues that the Legislature dealt with during the Second Regular Session. Click here for a summary of major legislation.
In the final weeks of the Session, I asked for your feedback on a number of issues. I am excited that 177 folks took the time to complete the survey and lots more of you checked it out. Click here to see the survey results. It was very interesting and helpful. Thank you! I will use it again next session.
Our main issue this session was confronting the shortfall of state funds that required a $310 million cut to the supplemental budget. This involved making difficult, but necessary, choices to cut funding to many government programs and agencies with an eye to protecting our most vulnerable populations. The spending cuts were achieved and the budget balanced without raising taxes on Maine citizens already struggling under a high tax burden and weak economy.
You can visit the Legislature's website at www.maine.gov/legis/ for more information on all bills and legislators' votes. You also can find many online services such as vehicle registration and driver's license renewal and hunting and fishing license purchases at www.maine.gov.
This spring, I was appointed to the Legislature's newly formed Joint Select Committee on Health Care Reform Opportunities and Implementation. This Committee is tasked with studying the federal health care reform legislation and determining what opportunities it presents for health reform in Maine as well as determining the State's role in implementing the federal law. The committee will be working throughout the summer and fall, and the group will report its findings and recommendations by November 3, 2010.
And it hardly seems possible, but the past two years have flown by and it is time again to begin my campaign for re-election. I have just announced my run for a third term in the Maine House of Representatives. I felt it was important to take additional time away from my small business so that Augusta hears the voice of business owners. Over the past four years I have worked in a bipartisan way and have gained respect on both sides of the aisle. I have also worked very hard to represent you, my constituents and foster a good working relationship between local and state government. I hope you will consider supporting me come November 2nd. Click here to read my press announcement and click here to make a donatin to my campaign.
Please contact me anytime if you have any questions about legislative or state matters. Furthermore, your comments and suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated as it is through your input that I am better able to truly represent you, the citizens of Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Long Island and part of North Yarmouth.
Have a wonderful Maine Summer!
Cordially,

Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess
State House Representative District 108
